China Information:
Yellow River (Huanghe) Delta |

The Yellow
River Delta |
The Yellow
River is the second longest river in China and its valley is
regarded as the cradle of Chinese civilization. Originating
on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the river has the highest silt
content in the world because it washes away much yellow soil
as it flows through China’s Loess Plateau. Hence it’s named,
the Yellow River.
The Yellow River Delta is situated in the Binzhou Prefecture
near the City of Dongying in north-western
Shangdong
Province. It has a population of 5, 2 million and covers an
area of 18,000 square kilometers. The delta is very rich in
arable land and other natural resources. In addition to
400,000 hectares of alkaline soil yet to be developed, the
Yellow River adds 2,000 hectares of new land at its estuary
every year. Proven petroleum reserves of 23.2 billion cubic
meters lie beneath vast stretches of beaches and mud flats
used for producing salt, bittern and other industrial raw
materials.
The Yellow River Delta is flanked by the
Shangdong Peninsula
to the north and Liaodong Peninsula to the east. It sites
right at the confluence of China’s Bohai Economic Zone and
the economic belt of the Yellow River reaches, separated
from Japan and Korea to the east by the Yellow Sea. This
favourable location will enable the area to become a major
raw materials center for north-eastern Asia in the future.
