Zhu Guangya

(1924-   )

Zhu Guangya born in December 1924 in Wuhan, central China's Hubei Province.

Is well-known physicist and one of the scientists responsible for developing China's nuclear and hydrogen bombs; was an organizer for Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant.

Started to work in April 1950, joined Communist Party of China (CPC) in 1956, joined army in June 1970;

Received doctorate in physics, University of Michigan, served as research fellow, professor, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences and of Academy of Engineering of China (AEC).

Served as vice chairman of CPPCC Eighth National Committee, president and member of CPC leading group of AEC, honorable chairman of China Association for Science and Technology (AST) and director of science and technology committee under Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence (CSTINI).

Studied at Central University in Chongqing, 1941-42; at Southwest Associated University, 1942-1945, served as an assistant at SW Associated University, 1945-46; studied at University of Michigan 1946-1950 and obtained doctorate in physics there.

Worked in Second Ministry of Machine Building Industry between 1957 and 1970; vice minister of Science and Technology Commission for National Defence (STCND), 1970-82; vice president of AST, 1982-91; chairman of AST, 1991-94; AST chairman, AEC president and director of science and technology committee under CSTIND since 1994.

Served as alternate member of Ninth and Tenth CPC Central Committees, member of 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th CPC Central Committee, Vice-Chairman of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Ninth National Committee.
